A ‘human firewall’ is a community of people who provide a strong line of defense against cyber and social engineering attacks. This requires strategic coordination to use and protect information systems—including those used for digital banking—in an informed and secure manner.

Your role in a human firewall

One of the best ways to do your part is to follow these general guidelines

• Carefully inspect all incoming messages: Cybercriminals who use social engineering tactics are counting on their victims to act first and think later. Carefully examine all incoming emails and texts for suspicious elements, such as email addresses or website URLs with random characters or unrelated words.
• Be wary of an urgent tone: Social engineering campaigns typically include language that conveys a sense of urgency. Examples include high-pressure sales tactics, limited-time offers, and intimidating ultimatums with the threat of legal action.
• Beware of unexpected messages: Never click on links or attachments in messages from a familiar business or someone in your contacts that seem to come out of nowhere. You could be redirected to a website where hackers can capture your information or download malware that can infect your device. Reach out separately to verify the message is legitimate.
• Delete any requests for financial data or passwords: If you are asked to reply to an email, phone call, or text message with your financial information or passwords, it’s most likely a scam. Even if the message promises a reward in return, never divulge sensitive information.
